Set Up a League Across Several Events
Set up a league that ranks athletes across a season of events: choose a point template, add events and categories, then publish the standings.
Applies to: Organization admins · Organizers
A league groups several events of your organization into one season-long ranking. Athletes earn points at every league event they compete in, and Hajime keeps the standings up to date as each event completes. Use it for a regional circuit, a national cup or a club championship.
Before you start
You need to be an admin or organizer of the organization that runs the league. A league can include two kinds of events: events your organization owns, and events your organization has recognised. See Organization Network and Event Recognition for recognition.
Athletes never sign up for a league. Anyone who competes in a league event and matches one of its categories appears in the standings.
1. Pick or build a scoring template
A scoring template holds everything that decides points: how many points each placement is worth, the event Tiers and the Club points rules. A league uses exactly one template. Open League Templates in your organization admin. Five ready-made templates are available:
| Template | Points |
|---|---|
| Simple Podium (3-2-1) | 1st 3, 2nd 2, 3rd 1 |
| Top 5 (10-7-5-3-1) | 1st 10, 2nd 7, 3rd 5, 4th 3, 5th 1 |
| Top 8 (IJF-style) | 1st 100, 2nd 70, 3rd 50, 5th 30, 7th 10, plus 5 for taking part |
| Winner Takes All | 1st 1 |
| Top 2 (3-1) | 1st 3, 2nd 1 |
Ready-made templates can't be edited. Clone one, or create your own, to change the numbers. A template also holds the Tiers that events pick from (for example Minor ×0.5, Standard ×1, Major ×1.5 and Grand Slam ×2: you can rename them, change the multipliers or Add tier), the Club points rules used by club standings, participation points, given to athletes who compete but don't reach a scoring placement, and optional bonus rules. How League Points and Standings Work explains each setting.
In elimination brackets both semifinal losers place 3rd, so a points row for 4th place never pays out there. The Top 8 template skips 4th and 6th for this reason.
Once a league using a template has started, that template is read-only. The editor shows the leagues under Used by and offers Duplicate and edit, which makes a copy of your own to change and assign. See "Publish and run the season" below.

2. Create the league
Open Leagues and click New League. On the Basics tab, give the league a name, a URL slug, an optional description and the season dates, then save. The other tabs unlock once the league exists.
On the Template tab, pick the scoring template.
3. Configure the ranking
The Configuration tab holds the ranking rules:
- Best Of (N results): only an athlete's N best results count toward their total. Leave it empty to count every result.
- Min Events to Qualify: how many league events an athlete must attend to be marked as qualified. Every event they attended counts here, including results that best-of leaves out.
- Tiebreaker Strategy: how athletes with equal points are ordered.
- Public league (visible to everyone): when off, only league managers can open the league page.
- Show live standings: when off, the public sees the standings only after you complete the league. You and other league managers always see them.
4. Add events
On the Events tab, search your organization's events and add them. Events your organization has recognised are labelled "Recognised".
To include a competition held outside Hajime, click Add external event and give it a name, a date, an optional results link, a tier. External events carry an "External" badge. Click Enter results on one, pick a category, then add athletes and their placements. Only athletes who competed in your organization's events (confirmed, checked in or disqualified, not withdrawn or no-show) or belong to an affiliated academy can be added. Use Remove next to a result to correct it; an athlete who already has a result for the event can't be added twice. An external event counts as its own event for qualification and earns no bonus points, and it doesn't appear in fight history. Until you enter results it doesn't affect the standings. Click Edit on an external event to change its name, date, link or tier.
Each league event picks a Tier from the league's template. The tier's multiplier scales placement points at that event: with ×2, a gold worth 10 points becomes 20. You never type a multiplier on the event itself. Once an event is finished its tier is locked, and so is the date of a finished external event.
5. League specialities and mapping
A league ranks specialities, not event names. On the Categories tab, a league has its own League specialities (for example "BJJ Gi" or "Kumite"). Every speciality of every league event is either mapped to one league speciality or marked Not part of this league. Results of specialities that are not mapped count for nothing.
When you add an event, a dialog lists its specialities. Choose a league speciality for each row, or pick Create new league speciality (offered only while categories can still be edited). Hajime pre-selects a suggestion when the speciality has the same template as one you already mapped, the same name or a similar name. When the scoring type (or the bracket type for performance specialities) differs from what is already mapped to that league speciality, the row shows Check this and nothing is pre-selected, because a template can be edited into a different sport. The event joins only when every row has a choice. Divisions created without a speciality appear as Divisions without a speciality; map them too.
Change a mapping at any time with Map on the Events tab, including on a completed league (the final standings update). A speciality added to an event after it joined the league shows an Unmapped specialities warning in the league editor and the rankings page, with a Map button. The event's organizer sees a banner in the event editor saying league managers still have to map it; a private league is not named there.
Renaming a speciality, in the event or in the league, never changes the standings: the link is the mapping, not the name. A league speciality can be deleted only when no mapping and no category uses it, and an event speciality with published, running or completed brackets can't be deleted.
6. Add categories
Categories split the standings, for example one ranking per weight class. On the Categories tab, categories are grouped by league speciality and Add category asks which one. Click Auto-detect to create one category per league speciality and division found in the mapped specialities of the league's events. Click it again after adding new events: it only creates categories that don't exist yet.
A category you add by hand with just a name has no filters and no league speciality, so it ranks every mapped result of every league event together. That suits a small club league with a single ranking.
7. Publish and run the season
Back on the Leagues list, move the league through its statuses with the buttons on its card: Publish, Start, Complete and Archive (Back to draft takes a published league back to Draft).
- Draft: only you see it while you set it up.
- Published: the league page is public (if the league is public). You can still change every setting.
- Active: the season is running. The basics and ranking rules are locked. You can still add events and categories.
- Completed: the season is over. The ranking rules are locked, and held-back standings are now public. You can still add events, enter external results, correct the standings and change Show excluded athletes; categories are locked, so add or auto-detect them before completing the league; the editor shows "Completed: changes update the final standings".
- Archived: kept as a historical record. It is read-only and its standings are never recalculated.
Standings recalculate by themselves after every change: a league event completing, an adjustment, an event or category added or removed, a template or configuration edit. Recalculate Rankings queues a fresh calculation, which you rarely need (it isn't offered on archived leagues). View Rankings shows the computed standings per category, and a warning appears there when specialities are not mapped yet, with a Map button per event that opens its mapping, and another when athletes in some mapped divisions are not ranked by any category, with a shortcut to Auto-detect.
A started league keeps its scoring
A league has started as soon as it has at least one event. From then on:
- Its scoring template is read-only. To change the points, click Duplicate and edit on the template, change the copy, then switch the league to it.
- Switching the template of a started league asks you to confirm with Switch template?: every event of the season is scored again with the new template. Confirm with Switch and rescore. The switch is recorded in the audit log. A new template can only be chosen if it has every tier the events use; otherwise add the missing tiers to the template (duplicate it if it is read-only), or change the tier of unfinished events.
- A finished event's tier can't change, and neither can a finished external event's date.
- The Club weight of each category can't change.
- To fix single mistakes, use an adjustment instead.
8. Correct the standings
Open the Adjustments tab and click New adjustment. Any league manager can add one, and it is available while the league is not archived. There are four kinds:
- Points: add or deduct points. They are added after the best-of rule, so a deduction can't be dropped as a worst result.
- Exclusion: remove an athlete from the ranking. Choose whether this exclusion follows the league setting, is always shown or is always hidden.
- Placement correction: replace an athlete's placement at one Hajime event. It works only when the athlete has exactly one placement at that event in that category. The public page marks it "Corrected".
- External result: a placement at an external event, entered from the Events tab with Enter results.
League managers see every athlete's full name in the Adjustments tab, the athlete search and the rankings page, including minors. The public league page keeps showing minors by their initials.
Every adjustment needs a reason of 3 to 1000 characters. Tick Show the reason publicly to show it on the public league page; otherwise only managers see it. To undo an adjustment, Revoke it with a reason: the standings are recalculated and the adjustment stays in the revoked list. To change one, revoke it and create a new one. An event that still has active adjustments can't be removed from the league: revoke them first. Revoked adjustments stay in the list after the event is removed, marked "event removed".
By default excluded athletes are hidden from the public page. Turn on Show excluded athletes in the Configuration tab to list them, unranked and marked "Excluded", unless an exclusion overrides it. An excluded athlete never appears on their own public profile.
The public league page is at your organization's page under the league's slug. It has three tabs: Standings, Events and Rules. A league also appears on the profile of each ranked athlete, as long as it is public and its standings are visible.
9. Turn on club standings
If your circuit crowns a best club, open the Clubs tab and tick Enable club standings, then click Save club standings. The club rules themselves live in the scoring template, under Club points: use Edit the template rules, or Duplicate template if you are on a ready-made one. Set a Club weight per category in the Categories tab if you use that rule. Leave Show club standings on the public league page off until you are ready to announce. Club Standings in a League: Rules and Breakdown explains every rule.
Frequently Asked Questions
An athlete is missing from the standings. Why?
Check that the event is completed, that the athlete's speciality is mapped to a league speciality and that the division matches one of the league's categories. Brackets that aren't completed don't count. An athlete without an athlete profile can't be ranked.
Can I add an event after the league is completed?
Yes. A completed league still accepts events, external results and adjustments, and recalculates the final standings. An archived league is read-only.
What happens if a league event is cancelled?
A cancelled event is left out of the standings the next time they are calculated.
