Club Standings in a League: Rules and Breakdown
Run a club trophy in your league: which club gets the points, the rules and their defaults, club adjustments, and how to read the breakdown of a club's total.
Applies to: Organization admins · Organizers · Athletes · Club coaches
Club standings add up what the athletes of each club earn in a league and rank the clubs. They are off until you switch them on. You choose which rules count, and every club total can be opened to see exactly where its points came from.
For how athlete points work, see How League Points and Standings Work. To create a league first, see Set Up a League Across Several Events.
Which club gets the points
A result scores for the club the athlete represented at that event, not the club they belong to today. An athlete who changes club mid-season leaves the points already won with the old club.
Athletes without a club score nothing for any club. Their results still count in the athlete standings.
Switch club standings on
Open the league in your organization admin and go to the Clubs tab. Tick Enable club standings and click Save club standings. The tab only holds this switch and the display setting: the rules themselves are part of the league's scoring template (see below). A league can have only one club table: it covers all categories, and each club row can be split by category.
The tab is read-only on an archived league. Standings update a moment after you save.
Show club standings on the public league page decides whether the public sees the table. Leave it off to compute the standings privately and announce them later. League managers always see them.
The rules
Club rules live in the scoring template, in its Club points section. In the Clubs tab, Edit the template rules opens the template, and Duplicate template makes an editable copy when the league uses a ready-made template. Other leagues using the same template share its rules.
Each rule has its own switch and its own values. Rules come in three groups: where points come from, what multiplies them, and what limits them.
Where points come from
| Rule | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Medals | Gives points for each medal. Medals are worth a club scale (a table of points per placement you edit) or The league points of the athlete, bonuses included. These points already include the event multiplier, so it is not applied to them again | On, club scale: gold 9, silver 3, both bronzes 1 (IBJJF scale) |
| Match results | Win, Draw, Loss and Walkover win points for each match. Byes never score | Off |
| Participation | Points per athlete who took part in a category | Off |
| Athlete adjustments | Athlete point adjustments also reach the club, multiplied by Share of an athlete adjustment that reaches the club | On, share 1 |
Draws only happen in matches recorded without a winner, such as round robin. Elimination brackets never produce them.
What multiplies points
| Rule | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Event multiplier | Uses the multiplier of each event's tier in the template. An event has no separate club multiplier | On |
| Category weight | Multiplies points by a weight per category, for example absolute ×1.5 and youth ×0.5. Set Club weight on each category in the Categories tab | Off, every weight 1 |
| Minimum entrants | A medal in a bracket with Fewer athletes than a number is multiplied by the Medal factor (0 to 1). At 0 it scores nothing | On: fewer than 2 athletes, factor 0 |
By default a medal won alone in a bracket scores nothing, as in IBJJF.
What limits points
| Rule | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Cap per category | At each event and category, only a club's best N athletes score (Results per category that count for a club) | Off |
| Best events only | Only a club's best N events count for the season (Best events that count for a club) | Off |
"Cap per category" counts per league category: all the weight divisions mapped to that category are counted together. Limits keep big clubs from winning on numbers alone. Results a limit leaves out stay visible in the breakdown, marked "Not counted".
Rules with no effect
A rule can be on and still change nothing, for example match points all at 0 or a cap higher than any club's entries. The editor tells you with "With these values this rule does not change any total", and the public text leaves it out.
Presets
Starting points offers three presets that fill in the values for you:
- IBJJF style: the defaults above.
- Athlete points: medals are worth the athlete's own league points.
- Match points: win 3, draw 1, loss 0.
Pick one, then tune the values. After any edit the label next to Current rules: reads Custom.
With Athlete points, club and athlete scales match, so keep the share for athlete adjustments at 1.
Rules and started leagues
A league has one set of club rules, the one in its template. Once the league has events, the template is read-only, so the rules cannot change behind anyone's back. The Clubs tab says "The league has events, so the rules of its template can no longer change." To change them, open the template and use Duplicate and edit.
To apply different rules to a started season, duplicate the template, change the copy's club rules, then switch the league to the copy in the Template tab. Hajime asks you to confirm with Switch template?: every event of the season is scored again, past club points change and the switch is recorded in the audit log. The Club weight of each category is also locked once the league has started.
When medals are worth the athlete's league points, the Event multiplier rule is locked with "Included in athlete points", because those points already include the event multiplier and it is never applied twice. Club points then mirror the athlete points of each event.
Tiebreaks
Clubs with the same points are ordered by most golds, then silvers, then bronzes, then the number of different athletes who scored. Clubs still level share the rank and are listed alphabetically.
Adjustments for clubs
Correct club totals by hand in the Adjustments tab, always with a reason. See Set Up a League Across Several Events for adjustments in general.
- Athlete adjustments reaching the club. When you add a points adjustment for an athlete, Credit the points to club is filled in with the club of their most recent counted result in that category. Change it, or choose No club if the adjustment should not touch any club. The club is saved with the adjustment, so a later club change does not move it. The share set in the Athlete adjustments rule scales it: a deduction of 10 points with a share of 0.4 costs the club 4.
- Club adjustments. Choose A club instead of An athlete, pick the Club, a category and the points. A club adjustment always applies, whatever the athlete adjustments rule says. You can pick a club that had a registration at one of the league's events or that belongs to your organization.
Adjustments are added after the limits, so a penalty is never dropped by a cap or a best-events rule. Excluded athletes add nothing to their club, and their adjustments do not reach it either. An adjustment can show its reason publicly or only to managers.
Read a club's breakdown
On the Clubs view of the rankings page, click a club to open its breakdown. Lines are grouped by event and category, and each shows the athlete, what earned the points and a formula:
-
10 × 1.5 (event) = 15: 10 points for the medal, multiplied by the event's multiplier. -
Adjustment to M. Rossi: -10 × 0.4 (scale) = -4: an athlete adjustment reaching the club through the scale.
Factors equal to 1 are not shown. The labels after the multiplication sign name the factor: event, category, few athletes or scale.
Why a line shows "Not counted"
Lines that did not count are greyed out with the reason:
- Not counted: beyond the best N athletes of the club in this category (cap per category).
- Not counted: outside the club's best N events (best events only).
A club whose lines are all not counted still appears, with 0 points and the reasons. A medal scaled to 0 by Minimum entrants stays listed with its formula, so you can see why it scored nothing. Private adjustment reasons show only as "Adjustment" to the public.
How points work
Next to the rules, How points work writes the active rules as plain sentences, for example "Gold 9, silver 3, bronze 1. A medal won alone in the bracket scores nothing." The same text appears on the public league page as How club points work. It always matches the rules and ends with "Results of athletes without a club do not count." The same How club points work card appears on the manager rankings page.
Who sees club standings
The public sees the Clubs view of the league page only when all of these are true:
- the league is public;
- its standings are visible (see "Who sees the standings" in How League Points and Standings Work);
- club standings are enabled;
- Show club standings on the public league page is on.
League managers always see them. When the public cannot, the page tells them: "Only league managers see the club standings right now."
On the manager rankings page, a notice says "The club rules changed after the last calculation. Recalculate to update the club standings." when you edited the rules and the table is out of date. Click Recalculate. Athletes who were minors at the league's latest event show with initials in club breakdowns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my club have no points for an athlete's medal?
Check that the athlete represented your club when registering for that event, and that the bracket had at least the minimum number of athletes. A medal won alone scores nothing by default.
Do club standings change the athlete standings?
No. The two tables are calculated together from the same results, and the athlete standings stay as they are.
I changed a rule. Do past results change?
You can't change the rules of a template once a league using it has started. Duplicate the template, edit the copy and switch the league to it: the whole season, finished events included, is scored again after you confirm. Switches and rule changes are recorded in the league's audit log.
