How League Points and Standings Work

How league points are calculated: placement points, event multipliers, bonus rules, best-of results, qualification, tiebreakers and who sees the standings.

Applies to: Organization admins · Organizers · Athletes

Every result an athlete gets at a league event turns into points. The standings add those points up per category, then order athletes with equal totals using the league's tiebreaker. To create a league, see Set Up a League Across Several Events.

Points for one event

For each bracket an athlete finishes, Hajime adds up:

  1. Placement points from the league's scoring template, multiplied by the multiplier of the event's Tier.
  2. Bonus points from the template's bonus rules. The multiplier doesn't apply to them.
  3. Participation points, only when the placement itself is worth nothing.

An example: the template gives 10 points for gold and 2 points for every ippon. An athlete wins gold at an event with a tier of ×1.5, with two ippon wins on the way. That's 10 × 1.5 + 2 × 2 = 19 points.

Open an athlete's breakdown on the rankings page to see each result as a formula, for example 10 × 1.5 (event) + 2 (bonus) = 19: the placement points, the event multiplier, then bonus and participation points added. Results that best-of leaves out are greyed out and marked "Not counted".

Placements

Placements come from the completed bracket. In single elimination the final decides 1st and 2nd, both semifinal losers place 3rd and quarterfinal losers place 5th. When the bracket has matches for 5th and 7th place, those decide the places. Round robin, Swiss and performance brackets use the final standings.

Which results count

A result counts for a category only when the event's speciality is mapped to the category's league speciality and the athlete's division matches the category's filters. Specialities marked "Not part of this league" or not mapped yet earn no points. Renaming a speciality doesn't change this. See Set Up a League Across Several Events for mapping.

Bonus rules

A bonus rule pays its points for every match the athlete wins a certain way, in any round. A gold medallist who wins three matches by submission earns a submission bonus three times. So does a bronze medallist, for each submission win they had.

You pick how the match must be won from a list:

  • a win method: points, submission, ippon, waza-ari, hansoku-make, disqualification, knockout, technical knockout, corner stoppage or doctor stoppage;
  • a specific submission, such as armbar, which pays only for wins with that submission.

Byes and walkovers never earn a bonus.

Best-of and qualification

With Best Of (N results) set, only an athlete's N highest-scoring results count toward the total. The other results still show in the athlete's breakdown, marked as not counted.

Min Events to Qualify sets how many league events an athlete must attend to be marked as qualified. Every event attended counts, including results that best-of leaves out. An athlete with two brackets at the same event, for example gi and no-gi in one ranking, counts as attending one event.

Athletes who haven't qualified still appear in the standings, without the Qualified mark.

Tiebreakers

When athletes have the same total, the league's tiebreaker orders them.

Most Golds

More gold medals ranks higher, then silver, then bronze.

Head to Head

The athlete who won more of their matches against the other ranks higher. Byes and walkovers don't count as wins here. If they never met, or each won the same number of times, medals decide. With three or more athletes on the same points, Hajime compares them in pairs, so the order may depend on who met whom.

Last Event

The better placement at the most recent league event ranks higher, then medals decide.

None: tied athletes share the rank

Athletes with the same points share the rank and are listed by name.

Under every strategy, athletes still level after all its criteria share the same rank: two athletes in 1st place are followed by 3rd place.

Adjustments

League managers can correct the standings by hand, always with a reason. See Set Up a League Across Several Events for how.

  • Point adjustments are added to an athlete's total after best-of, so they always count. The public breakdown shows "Adjustment +3" or "Adjustment -5", with the reason only if the manager chose to show it.
  • Placement corrections replace one placement at one event. The athlete's points and medals follow the corrected placement, and the public page marks it "Corrected". Who beat whom in head-to-head is not changed.
  • External results are placements at events held outside Hajime. Each external event counts as its own event for Min Events to Qualify and best-of, and its placements count for medals and tiebreakers. They earn no bonus points.
  • Excluded athletes have no rank and are never qualified. Depending on the league setting, they are hidden or listed below the ranked athletes marked "Excluded". They never appear on their own public profile.

One template per league

A league uses one scoring template. It holds the placement points, bonus rules, the tiers events pick from and the club rules, so one sentence explains any league: "this league uses template X". Once a league has started, its template is read-only. Switching it to another template rescores every event of the season, and only after you confirm. A finished event keeps its tier.

Club standings

A league can also rank clubs, adding up the points their athletes earn. Club standings are off until you enable them and follow their own rules. See Club Standings in a League: Rules and Breakdown.

Who sees the standings

League setting Who sees the standings
Public, live standings on Everyone, as soon as the league is published
Public, live standings off League managers during the season, everyone once the league is completed
Not public League managers only

Club standings follow the same visibility and also need Show club standings on the public league page to be on.

The same rules apply to the league section of athlete profiles, which never lists a league where the athlete is excluded. Athletes can find their league rankings and the adjustments about them, with reasons, in their data export. On the public league page, athletes who were minors at the league's latest event appear with their initials instead of their full name.

When standings update

Standings are recalculated automatically after every change: a league event completing, an adjustment, an event or category added or removed, a template or configuration edit. Athletes who no longer belong to a category are removed from it. A league manager can queue a fresh calculation with Recalculate Rankings in the league editor. Cancelled events are left out. Archived leagues are never recalculated and don't offer the button.
