What Happens When the Wifi Drops During Scoring

What the connection pill means for judges, how unsent taps are kept and delivered, and how Pause and late pauses work when the wifi drops.

Applies to: Judges · Main judges

Venue wifi fails. Your tablet keeps your taps and sends them when the link is back. This page covers what you see while it happens and what you should do.

The connection pill

A small pill on the scoring screen shows the state of your link.

  • Connected: everything is live.
  • Connection unstable: updates have stopped arriving. If it lasts about 10 seconds, a Reload button appears in the pill. Your controls stay usable.
  • Reconnecting: you are offline. Hajime keeps trying.
  • Saving delayed: the server is slow to save. Your taps have left your tablet and the server is holding them until it can write them, which happens as soon as it recovers. If the server restarts while it is still unable to save, those held taps can be lost, so tell the main judge if the delay lasts.
  • N unsent: the number of taps still on your tablet waiting to be delivered.

Taps are kept and sent later

While you are offline, keep scoring. Each tap is stored on your tablet and the totals show a "+N" next to the score until the server confirms it. When the link returns, the taps are delivered in order without you doing anything.

The queue holds 200 unsent taps. At that point new taps are refused with a message, and nothing already queued is lost. Reconnect before scoring more. Taps older than 12 hours are dropped when you reopen the page, and you get a notice.

Pause works offline

Start, resume and the decision buttons need a connection and stay inactive while you are offline. Pause is the exception. Press it and the button shows Pause queued (offline): the request is kept and delivered when the link is back.

On your tablet the clock stops at once, turns amber and shows Paused, waiting to send. The match clock itself keeps running until your pause arrives, and the other tablets still show it running. When the pause arrives, your clock shows the server's time, which can be a few seconds lower: see the next section.

When a pause arrives late

If your pause reaches the server more than 2 seconds after you pressed it, the clock stops the moment it arrives. The clock ran for those extra seconds, so the main judge is asked:

  • Give back N s: restores the lost time to the round clock.
  • Keep clock: leaves the clock as it is.

At most 60 seconds can be given back. You see a notice saying the clock ran that many seconds after your pause and that the main judge was asked whether to give the time back. If several judges paused late for different stoppages, the main judge answers them one after the other; judges who paused for the same stoppage share a single question, and once it is answered the same time is never offered again.

A pause you tapped before the clock was resumed does not stop the clock again: the resume counts as the later decision. You see a short notice, "Your pause arrived after the clock was resumed, so it did not stop the clock.", which you can dismiss. Your clock counts down again.

If your pause arrives after the round has already ended, it is refused. If you pressed it more than 2 seconds before the bell, the main judge sees a notice and can use the post-match options if the result needs a correction.

Taps that get rejected

Some taps cannot be applied when they finally arrive. The server refuses them and you get a notice that stays until you dismiss it. The main judge sees a banner per judge. The usual reasons:

  • the round was already closed;
  • the match was already completed;
  • the match was reset in the meantime.

Rejected taps are not retried. If the result is affected, the main judge corrects it from the post-match options.

Decisions wait for unsent taps

The decision buttons stay disabled while you still have unsent taps for the round. Once the link returns and the queue empties, they unlock. This keeps a decision from being made on incomplete scores.

If the unsent count never clears, tell the main judge. They can force-accept the round or enter your decision on your behalf.

Do not log out with unsent taps

Logging out clears the queue on that tablet. Any taps still unsent are lost. If the pill shows unsent taps, wait until it clears before you log out or hand the tablet to someone else.

The mat board and faceoff screens

If the mat board or the faceoff screen itself loses its connection, it shows Stale since N s. The numbers on screen may be behind until the link comes back. The marker disappears once updates arrive again.

Frequently Asked Questions

My pill says Reconnecting. Should I stop scoring?

No. Keep tapping. Check that the pill clears and the unsent count drops to zero after you reconnect.

I pressed Pause but nothing happened on the board.

Your clock holds in amber with Paused, waiting to send, and the button reads Pause queued (offline): the pause is waiting for the link. The board and the other tablets stop when it is delivered.
