Repechage Format

How Repechage ("second chance") brackets work in Hajime, including the built-in Judo, Karate, and Taekwondo presets that decide who fights back for bronze.

Applies to: Event organisers · Bracket managers

Repechage ("second chance") is a knockout format where athletes eliminated by the eventual finalists get a chance to fight their way back into medal contention. The bronze medal is earned on the mat rather than assigned by seeding. It mirrors the official repechage systems used in Olympic combat sports.

How the bracket works

Athletes compete in a standard single-elimination bracket. When an athlete's only loss comes from a competitor who goes on to reach the final, that athlete re-enters through the repechage ladder for a chance at bronze. Athletes eliminated by anyone who doesn't reach the final are out of medal contention.

Repechage Preset

Hajime ships three built-in repechage rule sets, matching common federation standards:

  • Judo Olympic: mirrors the IJF Olympic repechage system, awarding two bronze medals through repechage brackets built from each half of the draw.
  • WKF Karate: mirrors WKF kumite rules, with repechage limited to athletes beaten by the two finalists.
  • Taekwondo Repechage: mirrors World Taekwondo's repechage system for the bronze medal matches.

Pick the preset that matches your federation's rulebook. It determines how the repechage ladder is built, how many bronze medals are awarded, and which losers qualify to fight back.
