Generate and Publish Brackets for Your Event
Turn registered athletes into divisions and brackets, fix them by hand, then publish so athletes and the public can see them. Includes when to regenerate.
Applies to: Organizers · Bracket managers
Once registration is settled, the Brackets page turns your athletes into divisions and your divisions into brackets. Everything starts as a draft that only you and your team can see. Publishing is the moment athletes and the public get to see their matches.
You need the Brackets & schedule capability to use this page (see Add Staff to Your Event and Delegate Access). Divisions come from the categories and specialities you defined: read Categories & Divisions and Specialities & Templates first if those are not set up.
1. Create the Divisions
Open Brackets in the event navigation. The page is titled Brackets for your event and counts divisions and brackets generated.
- Generate Missing Divisions adds divisions for categories that do not have one yet and leaves the existing ones alone. It reports how many it created and how many already existed.
- Generate All Divisions (shown as Regenerate All Divisions once divisions exist) builds the full set from scratch.

Before registration closes, a banner reads Bracket changes may require regeneration. Late registrations change who belongs in each division, so the best moment to generate for real is after you close registration.
2. Generate the Brackets
Select Generate All Brackets to create a draft bracket for the divisions of the event, using the format configured on each speciality (Single Elimination, Round Robin and the other formats). To work one division at a time, use Generate Bracket on its card.
If the number of athletes suits a different format better than the speciality's, the card suggests it and offers Generate with the recommended format or Generate as configured.
3. Adjust What the Automation Got Wrong
Each division card has the tools for fixing things by hand.
- View Bracket opens the bracket. The Modify menu there lets you switch athletes, withdraw one, record a forfeit or merge with another bracket.
- Configure changes match duration and scoring settings. Under Format Options, Apply Format Options… regenerates the matches with new format settings.
- Move Athletes (on manual and free divisions) sends selected athletes to another division. If the source bracket is already published, Hajime warns that moving athletes affects existing match assignments.
- Clone copies a division.
- Convert switches a draft or published bracket to another format.
- Merge Divisions: tick two or more divisions, then select Merge Divisions in the bar that appears. Review the migration impact, choose the merged name, target speciality and division type, and confirm with Confirm Merge. You cannot merge while a source bracket is in progress or completed.
For a group that does not fit any category, create it yourself with New Manual Division: give it a name and a speciality, optionally an expected participant count, add the athletes with Add Athletes, and select Generate Matches. New Free Bracket does the same for the free format.
Round robin ties
When a round robin ends with athletes tied at the cutoff for the finals, the bracket shows Finals cannot start: tied athletes at cutoff. Select Resolve ties manually, give each tied athlete a position in Resolve Tied Athletes (1 is the highest rank) and select Apply Tiebreak Order. The finals fill in right away.
4. Publish
Check the brackets, then publish them one by one with Publish on the card (or Publish Bracket inside the bracket), or all at once with Publish All Brackets and Confirm & Publish.
Publishing does three things:
- The bracket becomes visible to athletes and on the public competition page. A draft shows nothing there.
- Automatic wins for athletes who drew a bye are resolved, and the winners move to the next round.
- The readiness checklist recounts: it expects every bracket to be published before you go live, and assigned to a mat (see Managing Mats and Schedules).
Publishing cannot be undone. Only draft brackets can be published. Delete Empty Brackets removes brackets with no athletes, and the trash button on a draft deletes just that one.
Regenerating
Regenerating deletes a bracket and builds a new one from the current registrations. Manual adjustments are lost, and the confirmation says how many.
- Draft bracket: regenerate freely.
- Published bracket: allowed, but athletes may already have seen their matches, so the confirmation warns you.
- In progress bracket: the confirmation warns that all ongoing matches are aborted, and it needs an extra tick before it lets you continue.
- Completed bracket: no Regenerate Bracket button.
An Out of date label on a card means the bracket has fewer or more athletes than are registered now. Regenerate Out-of-date with Confirm & Regenerate refreshes all of them at once. Manual and free divisions have no regenerate button: change them with Move Athletes or by deleting and recreating.
Regenerate All Divisions deletes every bracket and division, recreates divisions from your categories and invalidates mat schedules, so you reassign brackets to mats afterwards. During a live event the dialog is headed DANGER: Event Is Active, and it notifies affected athletes and co-organizers.
Changing the bracket type or scoring type under Advanced: Change Bracket Type or Scoring works through Reconfigure & Regenerate… and is only available while the bracket is not in progress or completed. All match results are lost.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fix one mistake after publishing without regenerating? Yes. Switch athletes, withdraw an athlete or record a forfeit from the Modify menu in the bracket.
Why can't athletes see their bracket? It is still a draft. Publish it.
